My paintings almost always start out with a doodle. This is the doodle that ended up becoming "Advice on Morals and Manners." I know it looks like a pretty fancy doodle, but it started very simply. I started drawing a face, and liked it so I kept adding until it looked like this. At some point along the way I thought it might make a good painting. |

You can see in these sketches how I roughed out a composition for the painting and did some more doodling for internal elements. Although I knew I wanted to make a painting based on the original sketch, since it was just a doodle the placement of objects wasn't at all planned out, so I made these two little thumbnails. They look rough, but I find it extremely important to do these before start on the painting. |

I thought I'd refine the cat a little more before starting out. |
